Over the years Sunburn Festival has become the largest dance music festival in Asia with fans from across the world coming down to Goa to end their year with some of the biggest names in electronic dance music. With names like David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell and more pioneers of the commercial spectrum of dance music gracing the festival’s mainstage, it was about time that the festival diversified and introduced more people to the underground music scene.
Since a couple of years, Sunburn Festival have invited some of the biggest names in Techno to the shores of Goa. And this year is going to be even more grand. After a short hiatus due to the pandemic, Sunburn have announced their full underground line-up for their 2022 Season Finale.
The 2022 edition of the festival will see one of the biggest acts in the electronic dance music culture, revered both by commercial as well as underground music lovers – Black Coffee make a return to India. Hailing from South Africa, Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo is DJ, Producer and Songwriter with 9 studio albums and a Grammy to his name. His sets are a blend of the different wavelengths of electronic music with R&B and Jazz and some pop culture influence too. One thing’s for sure, when Black Coffee takes over the console, his energy is infectious and you will find yourself grooving.
An emblematic artist of the Palestinian underground scene, Sama’ Abdulhadi is the first Palestinian DJ and electronic music producer. Much beyond the success she’s already enjoying, Sama’s goal has always been to put Palestine on the musical map. She let’s her music and her sets speak and become the voice of liberation. We are stoked to catch the Techno Rebel in action in Goa soon.
Red Axes is a project created by Tel-Aviv Based producers & DJ’s Dori Sadovnik & Niv Arzi. Based in Tel Aviv, the duo’s eclectic sound range is influenced by many genres, including disco, house, garage rock, post punk, psychedelic rock and techno. With a punk attitude, impressive live shows, and an ever-shifting psychedelic yet dancefloor-friendly sound, Red Axes have brought a breath of fresh air to the electronic music scene in recent years.
Anfisa Letyago has been a rising techno star for years, first playing around her home base in Naples, Italy then launching into the global scene on the power of her darkly swirling productions — and some extra help from techno taste-maker and her mentor Carl Cox. Continuing to the present day, Anfisa has kept honing her craft. Carrying her homeland’s techno influence throughout – something she coins “groovy techno” – she is unafraid to traverse genres throughout a set to pique her audience’s interest.
Another name we are super excited about are Afterlife superstars Mathame. Brothers Matteo and Amedeo Giovanelli conjure magic with emotive and cinematic soundscapes, crafting sci-fi worlds and ethereal energies that linger in the air like candles in a great cathedral. The duo are known to create a sphere of energy around the dancefloor with their fast paced, synth induced breakdowns and melodies that leave you wanting more.
Joining all the above international stars is a plethora of home brewed talent like Bullzeye, Ankytrixx, Priyanjana and more who have been leading the underground techno and progressive house culture here in India for decades now. We will also get to see some of the fastest rising starts of our homegrown culture like Axl Stace, Ayush, Melocomp, Mocid to name a few.
The underground lineup of the 2022 season final of Sunburn Festival promises to be a treat for all their fans. The festival will take place in Vagator, Goa from the 28th of December to the 30th of December.
